Climate Stabilization
We're protecting new kinds of research and helping to put innovative climate stabilization technologies into the hands of consumers, increasing access and improving environmental outcomes.
Every day, MIT researchers are revolutionizing the world of climate science and technology, helping us to better understand and address the challenges of climate change. Through the licensing and protection of these innovations, the Technology Licensing Office (TLO) supports researchers and startups in breaking down traditional barriers so that climate solutions can be deployed more quickly and efficiently. This results in a dramatic increase in our ability to mitigate and adapt to climate change, protecting our planet and its inhabitants.
What This Looks Like in Practice
- Carbon capture and storage (CCS): Technologies that capture carbon dioxide emissions from power plants and other industrial sources and store them underground, preventing them from entering the atmosphere.
- Renewable energy: Technologies that generate electricity from renewable sources, such as solar and wind power, reducing our reliance on fossil fuels.
- Energy efficiency: Technologies that help us to use energy more efficiently in our homes, businesses, and transportation systems, reducing our overall energy consumption.
- Climate adaptation: Technologies and strategies that help us to adapt to the impacts of climate change, such as sea level rise and extreme weather events.
- Sustainable urban planning: Strategies for designing and building cities that are more resilient to climate change and have a lower environmental impact.
- Climate modeling: Developing and using computer models to understand and predict the climate system, informing decision-making about climate change mitigation and adaptation.
