The MIT Technology Licensing Office (TLO), operating at the intersection between technology, business, and law, works with MIT’s brightest scientists and engineers, helping translate their ingenuity and ideas into commercial development through the licensing of new technologies. Intern With TLO

The TLO internship program is open to applicants who are US citizens or permanent residents and who have a background in life sciences, physical sciences, or business disciplines. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Throughout the program, students can expect to:

• Acquire introductory knowledge of the field of technology transfer, intellectual property management, and marketing
• Develop network connections with experts—our team has years of industry experience and connections
• Gain marketable skills and learn about other career paths
• Participate in special training and seminars on relevant topics

Responsibilities

• Generate non-confidential marketing briefs by reviewing available scientific documentation, disclosures, and patent applications, synthesizing the information into a concise marketing summary
• Develop marketing analysis reports
• Write social media snippets of non-confidential marketing briefs
• Other special projects as needed

Eligibility & Qualifications

We encourage you to apply for our internship program if you have a strong interest in technology transfer and meet the following eligibility criteria:

• You are a current undergraduate, graduate, or PhD candidate at MIT or a student or postdoc at another university—due to Institute Policy, MIT postdocs are ineligible to participate in this internship program
• You are a current US citizen or permanent resident
• You can commit to 10 hours/week during the spring and fall semesters or up to 20 hours/week between June – August
• Your background is in the life sciences, physical sciences, and/or business development disciplines

Qualified candidates should:

• Exhibit excellent written and oral communication skills, as well as a strong scientific/technical background
• Be able to research complex scientific concepts in a variety of fields and be able to synthesize the findings into a clear and concise marketing summary for general audiences
• Be self-motivated and eager to learn

Qualified candidates will be contacted for an initial interview process, and those who advance to the next round will be asked to complete a writing test.
